A Few Days in a Sinking City.

Venice is a small city that I can never get bored in. I love being able to eat outside of a restaurant looking out into the water watching boats go by. The beauty in its long history, which can be found everywhere, and most importantly in this trip My brother and I had a goal. To find buildings attached to our family history. In Venice my brother and I were aware of three things a set of stairs, a villa, and the Ca’ D’ Oro (translates to House of Gold). We spent all day looking for these things and we successfully found one. The Ca’ D’ Oro and that is because its a gallery. The other two buildings are private so finding them well we found out the hard way, its virtually impossible. We walked around Venice for 3 hours with a map trying to find these two just to see if we could see the exterior of the buildings and well the place with the stairs, gated off we couldn’t see it which was sad. The other location we were just missing completely. No matter what way we went it was just hard to get back on track with the map. Bright side we ended up buying this beautiful watercolor painting. The detail on it was just amazing.

Now the Ca’ D’ Oro the reason this is significant for my brother and I to find is because in the 800’s some ancient ancestor was part of the people in control of its construction. Most of the history I found on this was from my Uncle and then the remainder from our ever reliable friend Wikipedia. And the gallery had one piece that was contributed because of the historic family member which I’m not going to lie I was really excited to see. My uncle was very excited to find out we were going to Venice he was constantly saying go to the Ca’ D’ Oro. Go. Go. Go. So my brother made it our mission and I was proud to send him the photos.

This is the piece at the Ca’ D’ Oro that my brother and I found to have our family name on it.

Another beautiful thing that I expierenced in Venice was seeing the sunset over the city. It was truly a beautiful sight. And the photo I took can not even do justice to it.
We also went to a Morano glass blowing demonstration. The talent required to make these pieces are marvelous. The pieces are also able to be handled roughly (though I wouldn’t smash it on the ground). The first time I went to Venice around 4 years ago I bought a vase and when I saw my parents after I got back I showed them it’s strength by hitting the vase to the table and my dad started freaking out “Stop it’s glass! Why would you do that” and my brother and I just started laughing because this is what the guys showed us at the demonstration. Because the glass has been fired at least twice it allows the glass to be more durable. Also the gold plating around the edges helps as well.

Overall Venice is a beautiful region in Italy filled with history and things to do to keep you on your feet the whole time. It’s a shame I couldn’t stay at least one more night because one of the churches feast day is tonight and in celebration they are having a huge festival and they are having a fireworks show that I just wish I could see but it will be okay because Florence is another wonderful adventure.

Until Next Time Ciao!
